Having Trouble Getting a Young Boy to Read? Try Stink!
July 15, 2013
Lately, while at the desk, I've had a lot of inquiries for books that will get a young boy (6, 7, 8 years old) reading. Moms and Grandmas all want to know. "My son/grandson can read [easy] books but he doesn't want to. Do you have something that will get them to read?!" If you want a bit more content than the Captain Underpants books... here's my secret weapon that I happened upon with my son. It is the series of books about Stink by Megan MacDonald.
Maybe you've heard of Stink. He is the little brother of Judy Moody. Stink is a fun loving, adventurous boy like his big sister but with blonde spikey hair. You may have also seen Stink in the movie, Judy Moody and the Not-So-Bummer Summer. (Stink didn't play a big part so wasn't very memorable.) Some of MacDonald's books feature both of them, but my son wouldn't read those. No main character girls allowed in his reading!
My sister, his aunt, had given him a gift card for Christmas a few years back, so my son started out reading Stink when he was 7. His first books were Stink and the Worlds' Worst Super-Stinky Sneakers, Stink and the Great Guinea Pig Express, and Stink and the Ultimate Thumb-Wrestling Smackdown. Those hooked him! Next, we got Solar System Superhero and Stink and the Incredible Super Galactic Jawbreaker from MCPL. Finally, he read the Stink-o-pedia, which has a volume 1 and volume 2. He begged me to order volume 2. Way cool! Then, last year, MacDonald came out with Stink and the Midnight Zombie Walk. My son wasn't as into that one, but I think he was just moving on to harder books. YEAH! He's nine now. This summer, Stink and the Freaky Frog Freakout came out. I was going to get it for my son, but he declined. It did look too easy for him. And now, he is hooked on another cool series, My Life as a Belching Baboon by Bill Myers. However, when I tried cleaning out his bookcase with his three original Stink books, he wanted to keep those. So introduce your boy to Stink. He may just do the trick to get him reading!
