Social media can be a confusing beast. Anyone new to social media will often wonder what they’re missing and how to filter out the noise. Welcome to the big world of hashtags. What is a hashtag? It is a topic label that, when clicked, will show you all the other conversations going on that share the same label on your social platform of choice. For example, the SyFy channel aired a new movie a couple weeks ago, and it was all the rage on Twitter with the hashtag #sharknado. If you wanted to view all the opinions and snarky comments about the movie, you would’ve clicked #sharknado in your social platform and seen only those posts with this hashtag.
And that’s how it works! It filters out the noise, letting you focus on the conversations relevant to your interests. Popular hashtags include #caturday, #food, #love, and even #awesome. But have you tried #genealogy?
MGC is on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+, and you can find the conversations we’re having by tracking our hashtags, like #mymgc and #genealogy. Want to know what blogs we’ve posted on our social platforms? Search #mymgcblog. Or maybe you’d like to know what periodical reviews we’ve talked about – search #mymgcperi.
