Happy Social Media Day!
June 29, 2011
Tomorrow, June 30, is Social Media Day. It’s not your typical holiday, and you won’t find it on any government calendars. But, it is becoming popular in the digital world.
It is sponsored by Mashable, an online blog and community dedicated to social media news across the globe. I follow them on Twitter so that I am quickly informed of breaking news. Social Media Day is a day set aside to celebrate the great leaps that online media has taken in recent years. Tomorrow is the second annual Social Media Day, and there are many events happening around the world to pay homage to social media like Facebook, Twitter and foursquare.
To celebrate, you can login and connect with your social media networks, tweet-stalk events on Twitter or even attend a meet up in your area. I specifically use the term "meet up" to mention another social media site that Mashable is using, Meetup.com. It is a website to organize on the fly meetings with friends. To find out more or find a meet up near you, check out mashable.com/smday/. In fact, according to their map, there are quite a few meetups here in the Kansas City area! Some meetups may have refreshments and activities as well.
It’s amazing to think how far the online world has come in a relatively short time. Why not join in on the fun and follow @mashSMday on Twitter or meet up with some other online fanatics (in the physical world). Who knows what could happen? You might become more than internet friends with someone!
