Happy Birthday Clifford!
September 26, 2012
So my mom called me last night, and you never know what we'll talk about. Our conversations cover a wide range of topics, and we often solve the world's problems together on the phone. Mom delights in surprising me with some random bit of knowledge that she's discovered. She reads a lot, and she reads a variety of books and magazines. She is a well-rounded reader, to be sure!
This conversation started with the following question: "Well, did you have a big birthday party today at the Library?" I paused and thought about it, frantically trying to come up with whose birthday it was. I could only think of my (late) grandmother, and I couldn't figure out why we'd celebrate her birthday at the Library. Finally, I gave up and asked whose birthday it was. Mom chuckled softly--she loves to tell me something I don't know--and announced it was Clifford the Big Red Dog's birthday.
Dang! I missed it! The North Oak Branch has 2 "Cliffords" who occupy a special seat in our children's area. We love Clifford! Our young readers make a beeline for Clifford when they visit; giving Clifford a big hug is their top priority. Apparently, this was Clifford's 50th birthday...and I missed it. Scholastic had a big party at their New York headquarters Monday, and author Norman Bridwell was even on hand to take some questions from some first and second graders who were watching the party via webcast. Clifford is one of Scholastic's most successful characters. There are over 126 million copies in print in 13 languages, a TV show, and many products. You can find Clifford books in any MCPL branch. Look in the Juvenile Easy section under the code BRI, and you'll find the adorable canine's adventures waiting for you and your child to discover.
So Happy (belated) Birthday, Clifford! We love you!
