Happy 4th of July! (And Canada Day too...)
June 29, 2011
This Monday is Independence Day, marking the date in 1776 when the Declaration of Independence was adopted by the thirteen American Colonies. Everyone (including your library staff) will be taking the day off to spend time with friends and family, and enjoying that storied American pastime: setting off a ton of fireworks.
For all of us closet pyromaniacs, the 4th of July is one of the few days we can gleefully blow things up (following proper safety guidelines, of course) without fear of public recrimination. But for those of you who prefer a tamer holiday, there are several local fireworks displays where you can sit back and watch the show without fear of injury:
Mosby City Hall in Mosby, MO
Music and games at 7 p.m.
Fireworks Display July 3 at 9 p.m.
Elms Resort and Spa in Excelsior Springs, MO
Fireworks Show July 3 at 9:30 p.m.
Kansas City Riverfest at Berkley Park, Kansas City, MO
Fireworks July 3 & 4 at 10:05 p.m.
Worlds of Fun - Independence Weekend Firework Display, I-435 and Parvin Road, Kansas City, MO
July 2, 3 & 4 at 10 p.m.
But we shouldn't forget our friends to the North. Canada Day is on July 1st, commemorating the day in 1867 when their three colonies joined within the British Empire as a united country. The Canadians also celebrate this holiday with Fireworks and Barbeques, so why not set off some extra fireworks for Canada this weekend as well!
