Happy 150th Edith Wharton!
February 02, 2012
Edith Wharton was born on January 24 in 1862. She often wrote about New York society around the turn of the century. In 1920, she won the Pulitzer Prize for The House of Mirth. In addition to her fictional works, she also published books on interior decorating.
When I think of sledding, it reminds me, firstly, of the scene from National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation where Chevy Chase uses a cooking additive on the sled and loses control. Secondly, sledding reminds me of the tragic accident that occurs in Ethan Frome, my favorite of Edith Wharton’s novels.
I won’t give anything away, but if you want a good, though sometimes depressing read, try something by Edith Wharton.

Edith Wharton's Books
I really enjoyed Ethan Frome; it was required reading in our literature class. I especially liked the irony in the tale...the role changes from the sickly wife becoming the caregiver to the injured lovers becoming the one's being cared for!
Another required reading that I enjoyed was the "Boarded Window" by, I think, Eudora Welty but my memory is not so good! That was over 50 years ago!
Thanks for reminding me of Edith Wharton's work...I'm going to check-out some of her other books!
