Halloween Costumes...In September?
September 09, 2011
It's about that time again...the time of year when I start frantically trying to decide what to be for Halloween! Now, I am well aware that it's September. You naysayers may scoff, but I hand make my costume every year. I love sewing and being creative. I love the freedom that comes from being able to adjust details to my every whim. (I think this sleeve needs more ruffles! This hat should be red!)
Some of my past costumes: "Sally" from The Nightmare Before Christmas, "Velma" from Scooby Doo, "Alice" from Alice in Wonderland, "Jill (post hill)" from Jack and Jill; last year I created my own Steampunk look. As you can see, I'm pretty committed to coming up with one of best costumes in the room. I always plan to attend several Halloween parties, so I can show it off as often as possible.
It's kind of funny, putting so much effort into an outfit you will only wear a few times, but I think it's worth it. I always get lots of compliments, and I have a great time putting it all together! This year, I'm following a literary theme: either Jadis the White Witch from C.S. Lewis' The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (from his Chronicles of Narnia), or Harley Quinn, Joker's wacky paramour, from the Batman series. Now, both of these are iconic characters I would be interpreting as my own. I won't be trying to copy the traditional costume, or the way they are portrayed in TV and movies, and that is the part of the challenge I enjoy most. Feel free to weigh in! What do you think?
What are you going to be for Halloween? Have you decided yet? It's time to start thinking about it! Be sure to join us for some of our great Halloween events at South Independence:
- Pumpkin Carving for Teens
- Haunted Library
- Spooktacular Face Painting (Sign up quick, this is limited to 20 participants!)

The debate has been pretty heated! I'm leaning toward Harley. My mom taught me how to sew, and it's something I am so grateful to have learned. I know that MCPL is trying to get some sewing machines so we can possibly have sewing classes in the future.
We *do* have some great sewing books, and you could probably get some tips and tricks from those on how to teach yourself!
I want to learn how to sew. I
I want to learn how to sew. I think I'm pretty horrible at it, but, in all honesty, I could probably make more of an effort:P
And huzzah for Halloween costumes based on book characters.
I'm dressing up as Katniss Everdeen from the Hunger Games books.
PS Harley Quinn
Dooo eeet!
