The Great Book Search

March 14, 2013

I'm sure all of us have a few books that we remember from our childhood. For me, they are the books that my grandma read to me when I was a little girl. Grandma and Grandpa always kept a stash of children's books at their house. It was one of the things that remained steady throughout the years, and I could always count on a few books being present.

I was recently reminded of a book that I loved so much, but all I could remember were bits and pieces of the plot. I knew that this book was about some kids who were at their home or their grandma's; I couldn't remember exactly. I also knew that in this book the adult baked cookies and the children were excited to see how many cookies they would each get. Then, some friends came to visit and the children realized that they would now get fewer cookies each. The plot continues as more and more friends show up, eventually leaving each child with just one cookie each. It was with this little bit of information that I began my search. I knew it wasn't very much, but I had a feeling that it would be enough to find the book. I thought of all the ways that I could look up this information and what came to mind first was to find a database through MCPL that would allow me to search for this children's book. I found myself in NoveList K-8 Plus. This particular database specializes in books for children and young teens, so it was just the one I needed! I tried typing "cookies and friends" into the search bar and came up with many results, too many. Then, I decided to try something else. I wasn't sure if it would work, but it was worth a try. I changed my search words just a bit and searched for "cookies and friends and doors." The results came up and I scrolled down the page, looking with eager eyes for my treasure. Suddenly, there it was, the book I had been searching for! It is titled The Doorbell Rang, and it's written and illustrated by Pat Hutchins.

I am very excited to have found this book and plan on checking it out soon to take a walk down book memory lane. If your interest has been sparked, you can check it out, too! NoveList K-8 Plus is certainly a great database, and it really made my day by finding one of those great books of my childhood. Are you searching for books you read as a kid? Give NoveList K-8 Plus a chance and you might just find what you're looking for!
