Grandparenting From a Distance

December 10, 2012

Getting to see family members is a part of the holiday season. It gives us a reason to see everyone and most especially the grandchildren. Being a grandparent is a wonderful thing. People love their children but, my oh my, there’s so much love for the grandchildren. Maybe it’s because we don’t have to discipline them or have responsibility for them. A role of a grandparent is just to lavish love onto the grandkids.

I have eight grandchildren. Seven of my grandchildren live close to me, and I see them a couple of times a month or more. One of my grandchildren lives far away. I want to visit a couple of times a year, but because of money that seems impossible. Skyping is okay, but I feel that it’s not near enough to form a strong bond. I wanted some new ideas of how be a faraway grandma, so I got the book Long Distance Grandparenting, which gave some good ideas. It also let me know that I’m not the only grandparent that has to love from a distance. I got more ideas from Connect to Your Grandkids by Cheri Fuller and Wonderful Ways to Love a Grandchild by Judy Ford. All the books gave me so many ideas that I am inspired to be the best grandma ever, and I almost wish I could start over.

Happy Grandparenting!
