Picture a ballroom full of today’s hottest romance authors and hundreds of their fans. Throw in a dozen cover models – yeah, those bare-chested guys. Add workshops for writers, readers, and booksellers. Imagine disco dances, costume balls, raffles, contests, scavenger hunts, and enough swag per person to weigh down Arnold Schwarznegger.
Got all that?
Okay, now put everything in one of the most luxurious hotels in Kansas City, The Sheraton at Crown Center, and you’ve got the 2013 RT Booklovers Convention!
Every morning at eight-thirty until after midnight each night, avid romance readers and writers hob-knobbed, schmoozed, and partied. Non-stop workshops taught everything from indie publishing basics to how to write a realistic love scene between a human being and a paranormal creature.
I came away with a new appreciation for the scope of romance in the book world. I didn’t need to be told it was one of the most popular genres, I see that every day at the check-out desk. But, I had no idea there were so many sub-genres and so many readers devoted to each and every one.
Follow my example, if you’ve never picked up a romance novel, and give it a try. MCPL is the perfect place to dip a toe in the waters. Start with the RITA Award winners and romance websites. Look for a sub-genre that you already like to read – historical fiction, fantasy, urban contemporary, thrillers, mysteries, westerns…
One thing I learned at the convention, there’s a happily-ever-after out there for everyone.
