Gone to the Birds...
May 31, 2013
It was about three years ago that I first spotted a Baltimore Oriole hanging around my yard. Not really being a bird person, I just thought a bird is a bird, even if it was a brilliantly blazing orange color.
Well, I've always liked hummingbirds and put several feeders out for them. Then, one day, my husband sees a magazine called Birds and Blooms that just happened to have a hummingbird photo on the cover. Next thing I know, he bought me a subscription. I couldn't help but read it from cover to cover.
Okay, so now I am one of those nutty people that buy 40 pound bags of bird seed to keep their feeders stocked. I have been surprised at how many different kinds of birds I have now.
My favorite is still the oriole. In fact, I have a pet one that comes to my hummingbird feeder several times a day. He also likes the orange halves I put out for him. I know they like grape jelly also. If you check out our Gardening, Landscape & Horticulture database and search on Baltimore Orioles (not baseball!), an article from Mother Earth News has a great idea for grape jelly feeders. I might just try it myself.
P.S. I named this oriole Orangeboy!
