Genealogy Periodical Gifting
July 29, 2013
During our Ancestry Day event this spring, we had a member of the Lincoln-Lancaster Genealogical Society visit here. She noted that we had issues of their society newsletter on our current shelf, but they weren’t the most current. So she asked me about it, and we discovered that the society had gone to digital copies for members and were no longer sending the hard copy issues.
She reported this to the officers of her society, and the upshot is, they provided us with the back issues that we were missing. They have also reinstated us to their email list so that we could continue to get the issues via email/online and then get them printed out for our shelves. We are grateful that this society has a passion for keeping their issues available here for our MGC researchers that would like to find more about genealogy in their county. Besides the Lincoln-Lancaster Genealogical Society, there are many other societies around the country who generously provide us with complimentary subscriptions to their publications, which adds greater depth to our holdings here.
In addition to the society periodical gifts, we also receive gifts from individuals who subscribe to a publication and then share their copy with us once they have read it. Almost all of the periodicals we have about specific families are donated subscriptions. Recently, someone noticed that we no longer had current issues of the Mayflower Quarterly, and as a result, will be donating a gift subscription to it for us.
Our periodicals budget goes only so far, so we thank all who generously try to fill in our holdings with periodicals from their area/interest to make our collection even more magnificent!
