The Front Page of the Internet
September 10, 2012
Have you heard of Reddit? The site touts itself as "The Front Page of the Internet." It's a way of catching up on important news, learning new things, getting advice, discussing favorite authors, movies, video games, sharing funny pictures, and more. Each post you read will be accompanied by up and down arrows. If you found an article or resource interesting, helpful, or worthwhile, click on the up arrow to move it up in the ranks. If it contained false information, didn't meet your expectations, or was generally rude or unhelpful, down-rank it by clicking on the down arrow.
If you've got some extra time on your hands, browsing Reddit can be very insightful. You can browse across multiple categories by clicking on one of the tabs at the top of the screen. Options include "hot," "new," "controversial," and "Top." If you'd like to hone in on a particular "sub-reddit" of interest, you can click one of the links that run along the top banner of the page. You can also type in: "www.reddit.com/r/(pick something!)." Anyone can create a sub-reddit. Entering any of a large number of words or phrases after that second "/" will redirect you to pages on a wide range of subjects.
You do have to sign up for a free account to post to Reddit, but the registration process is pain-free, I promise! The next step is to start exploring.
Some of my favorite sub-reddits:
www.reddit.com/r/todayIlearned
...And, of course,
What sub-reddit will get you hooked?
