While the eBook revolution has redefined readership, it has also redefined the concept of the bookmobile, as MCPL customers will see when the OverDrive Digital Bookmobile makes two stops at MCPL later this month.
When I begged my manager 5 years ago to let me stop doing storytime, I had no idea it would be one of the best ideas I would ever have. That somewhat selfish request on my part introduced Miss Kelly and her storytimes to the Grandview Branch. Over the last five years, Kelly Meyers has proven herself to be a wonderful asset to our branch and our community. Her Tuesday morning storytimes have grown by leaps and bounds over the years and continue to be the most popular programs we have at Grandview.
In the summer of 1851 in London, in the midst of the first international chess tournament, a chess game was played at a tavern not far from the tournament itself. This would eventually become one of the most famous chess games ever played. The two players were Adolf Anderssen and Lionel Kieseritzky, both taking a break from the tournament. Anderssen made bold, sacrificial moves, including sacrificing his bishop, two rooks, and his queen to secure a victory in 26 moves.
Our newest library is complete, and we welcome you to come enjoy a day of ideas and ice cream as we explore all the features of the new building. On Saturday, June 22, MCPL will open the doors to the Woodneath Library Center, located in the Shoal Creek area of Kansas City, Missouri. The grand opening will take place at 8900 NE Flintlock Road with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10:00 a.m.
The weather is starting to heat up and the remaing days of school are dwindling down, but these aren't the only signs that summer is approaching fast. The changing of the seasons is also marked by the beginning of the annual Summer Reading Program!
One of the most important things that the Library does every year is establish a budget for the following year. Budgets communicate what is important to an organization because it shows how an organization chooses to allocate resources. As one of my professors told me, you can never hope to understand an organization unless you understand its budget and finances.
Mid-Continent Public Library is taking part in an exciting new reading program through OverDrive called "Big Library Read," and we hope you'll consider participating!
I recently participated in the 2013 National Library Legislative Day. This event is sponsored by the American Library Association and occurs in the spring every year. The Missouri delegation was comprised of three public librarians, two academic librarians, and one school librarian, coming from all parts of the Show-Me State.

One of my best memories from last year is traveling to Chicago to attend the RT Booklovers Convention. After five days of book signings, authors’ workshops, fantastic all-day parties, and a TON of swag, I couldn’t wait to get home and tell everyone about the fabulous time I had. Authors are our Rock Stars after all, so meeting so many of them in person was the ultimate thrill! One of my co-attendees, Beth Atwater, called the convention "one giant slumber party with 1,000 of your best friends." What could be better than that?
