Fifty Shades Apart
July 06, 2012
At our most recent staff meeting, the question was posed, "Who’s reading Fifty Shades?"
Bashful expressions were exchanged and hands were reluctantly raised. Once the snickering died down, the book-talk began. While the story may be infamous at this point, what we actually take away from it varies tremendously.
Whether it’s, "Worst series ever," or "Actually, once you get past the first book, it’s kind of a sweet story," the jury is definitely still out.
Initially, the erotic content was what got everyone started chatting away. The list of patrons on hold for the series grew past 1,000. Then, it was the publishing tale –from fan-fiction to best-seller, that kept us talking. Now, it’s the divide of people who loved it vs. people who hated it.
From what we’re seeing, there’s no middle ground.
You decide for yourselves, but be sure to weigh in. We love it when you join our discussions.

Okay Claycomo Staff, I love
Okay Claycomo Staff, I love you guys and you always pick the best books for me and my kids, but how can you be confused about this one? Who ever said it was the worst series ever was right. It was racey in the beginning, but by the end of the third book it was just ridiculous. If I was Stephanie Meyers, I would have sued, and not because of the fan-fiction connection to Twilight. I just wouldn't want my name or work associated with it.
I guess I will say thank you for taking the time to read it. Your staff seems to have read everything and you can't pick a winner if you've never read a loser like Fifty Shades. Thanks for taking one for the team!
Thanks to MCPL for not being a censor. Yes, I hated the books, but some love it, and we should have the chance to decide for ourselves. Like everyone else, I started reading these books once I read that they were being banned.
I should have known my library wouldn't do that.
-Still a devoted library fan
