Field Trip
April 26, 2011
Our 2nd Tuesday morning Book Club recently read Girl in Hyacinth Blue, which deals with a Vermeer painting and the model.
Our interest about the art of the Dutch Golden Age was piqued, and we decided a trip to the Nelson-Atkins Museum was in order. Most of us had not seen the new Bloch Building at night, and that was a further incentive for our trip. A docent led tour was arranged. Meeting at the Riverside Branch on a Friday night, we all piled into two vans and the "Field Trip" began.
Although the Nelson does not have a Vermeer, we learned about the 17th and 18th century Dutch and European Art collection which further whetted our appetites.
It was rewarding to hear some of our members say that they had gotten way out of their comfort zones and that they really enjoyed our trip. We all learned something new, and now, we are looking for an excuse to take another field trip.
Our next Book Club discussion is Tuesday, May 10th at 10:00 A.M. We will be discussing The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. You are welcome to join us.
