Is a tomato a fruit or a vegetable?
According to scientists, tomatoes are fruits because they have seeds. But thanks to an 1893 U.S. Supreme Court decision, tomatoes are vegetables.
The Court ruled that it didn't matter what scientists said. People think of tomatoes as vegetables and eat them with the main part of dinner. Fruits are eaten as desserts. The Court said, since nobody has a tomato for dessert, it has to be a vegetable.
In 1987, Arkansas named the tomato the official state fruit and the official state vegetable. Check out the TIME for Kids Big Book of What? for more fascinating facts!
