Fairies and Witches and Wizards, Oh My!
April 01, 2013
Have you noticed that going to the movies has been a little more magical lately? For every superhero, there’s a princess. For every alien invasion, there’s a roaring dragon. It seems like our childhood bedtime stories have taken over the big screen; fairy tale films are all the rage!
The trend started back in 2010 with a little movie directed by some guy named Tim Burton. Alice in Wonderland was a huuuuge smash hit that year, big enough to make movie execs sit up and take notice. Since then, we’ve been facing a tidal wave of swords and sorcery movies, including:
- Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil
- Snow White & the Huntsman
- Mirror Mirror
- Jack the Giant Slayer
- Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters
- Oz the Great and Powerful
And it doesn’t look like the tide is turning anytime soon. Guillermo del Toro is apparently working on a stop-motion version of Pinocchio; Angelina Jolie has donned the horns of Sleeping Beauty’s enemy, Maleficent (check out the photo!); and Glee’s Lea Michele voices our favorite jeweled-shoed heroine in next year’s Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return.
So what do you think? Did you enjoy any of these movies? I hated Burton’s Alice in Wonderland (although Anne Hathaway is always awesome!), but I looooved Oz the Great and Powerful (especially Michelle Williams as the bubbly Glinda).
What fairy tales would you like to see get the silver screen treatment (I can’t be the only one who thinks a Twelve Dancing Princesses movie would be cool)? Or, are you sick of the fairy tale thing altogether? Let me know what you think in the comments!
