Everything Old in New Again

May 27, 2011

A couple of weeks ago, I streamed Rocky and Bullwinkle for my grandkids. They loved it! Their favorite part was the Fractured Fairytales segment. All I could do was shake my head because I remember Rocky the Flying Squirrel from my childhood, and let’s just say that was a while ago!

My brothers and I would get up early Saturday morning and wait for Scooby Doo and the gang to solve the newest mystery. Now, my grandkids are doing the same thing, except Scooby Doo is on the Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, Boomerang and all the others. Good grief, we had to wait until the weekend, but now all I have to do is turn on the TV!

I cannot tell you how many times I have heard a parent in the library say to me "My child loves the Little House on the Prairie books" or "My child loves the Boxcar Children." I am surprised by the number of things that were new when I was a youngster and how they have made a comeback. So as much as I would like to think that everything changes and all things move forward, there are some things that stay the same and don’t go anywhere. Here are some other things that the kids of all ages still love:

  • Nancy Drew
  • Hardy Boys
  • Speed Racer
  • Transformers
  • Dick and Jane
  • Barbie

And guys, for some reason, still love the Three Stooges, which only proves that everything -- and I do mean EVERYTHING -- old really is new again.
