The End Is Near?

January 03, 2012

Well, it is here, 2012, the year the Mayan calendar ends…

I, for one, am a bit skeptical about the world ending simply because the Mayan calendar ends, especially after the Y2K scare in 1999. Having said that, I still find myself getting caught up in "the end is near" phenomena. I even made a display about self-sufficiency, aka living off the grid. I decided to do some research on the Mayan calendar and see what all the hoopla was about. I went on one of our Research Databases called Academic Search Premier and found some hits regarding the Mayan prophecies and calendar. One result was an article from The Times out of London, England, which mentions the fact that "out of 15,000 registered glyphic Mayan texts discovered, these are the only two that mention 2012—scant references for an event of such supposed magnitude."

Whether you believe it is the end of the world or not, you can find out more about 2012 doomsday theories and prophecies in these books:
