"Elementary, My Dear Watson..."

January 24, 2012

I guess Sherlock Holmes is forever and always. He first appeared in 1887 and has been adventuring ever since. In 2011, he turned up in the movie entitled Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.

In the intervening 124 years, Sherlock has had his portrait painted and his biography written. He has even gotten married, and his wife is featured in a series of adventures written by Laurie King. As if there is a logical development to Holmes' personal life, J. T. Lescroat writes the story involving Son of Holmes. Who knew Sherlock would have an entire family?

I have enjoyed King's Mary Russell novels. I like her style, her plots, and the history that comes through in them. The eleventh and latest novel, Pirate King, takes place within the realm of silent films and the early development of the film industry, along with real pirates who provide the adventurous elements. It's good reading and fun for mystery readers!

Son of Holmes came out originally in 1986, and it showed up again this year in an audiobook read by Tim Baltz. I must confess to having become totally enthralled with this man’s ability to interpret all the character’s personalities with his voice. Each person’s speech has a distinct accent, speaks with individual cadence and timber, and uses gender specific sound characteristics to tell the story. Hats off to Mr. Baltz!

There are so many others who have contributed to the wealth of Holmes stories. One fine list of titles is available here. This list also contains some excellent comments to help you decide which story you might like to indulge in. And of course, MCPL has many Sherlock Holmes titles available to you on our shelves.
