El Chaparrita
November 15, 2012
Wow! Need any fancy boots, Mexican music, or cane sugar cones? I have discovered a tiny store in Raytown with all these items and more.
I decided to stretch my horizons and go to a few local places that are out of my comfort zone. El Chaparrita (petite in English) really packs a lot into a tiny space. The fresh pastries and breads looked yummy. I also saw cheeses, tamales, spices, peppers, salsas, and piñatas.
I was most fascinated with the piloncillo mediano (medium cane sugar), which is sold in a cone shape. It is a form of cane sugar that hasn't been processed. It has a rich golden brown color and a delicious flavor similar to molasses. I may be hooked on it now. It's wonderful in a cup of hot tea!
I must remember this store when Cinco de Mayo rolls around. If you love Mexican food, try a few items. Check out a Mexican cookbook from the Library for inspiration. You might be surprised. Gotta go get more of that sugar now. Where will I go next?...
