Dresses, Cakes, Rings—Oh My!

January 15, 2013

Not every weekend gets to be filled with an adventure in the KC Weddings Bridal Spectacular, like this last weekend was for me. My fiancé and I are still in the early stages of planning; we have over a year before the special day on Halloween 2014. But, it’s never too early to get started on things, right? Right.

We rose at the early hour of 8 a.m. to get to the convention center only to arrive at the end of a very long line for tickets and entrance to the event (though surprisingly it only took about 10 minutes to get into the event). The whole area was packed full of vendors showcasing their awesome products and services for weddings. I think the best ideas I received from this event were those that helped me figure out everything that we DON’T need for the wedding, or at least things we don't need other people to make or do.

We know the theme of our wedding, Victorian era mixed with classy Halloween décor. We talked to a DJ who gave us the idea of using masks, like those you would use at a masquerade ball. We also saw a beautiful black dress—not quite what you’d think fit for a wedding, but it was very elegant. We may just have to work around her father’s slight disapproval of an all-black dress.

There were cake vendors, retail representatives signing people up for registries, travel agencies, vendors for tux outfits, and people promoting venues to book for the ceremony and reception.

To be honest, for a first-timer, it was a little much to take in. We’re still sorting through all of the handouts we got from the plethora of places.

Now, the plan of attack is to spend Sundays as our wedding planning days so that all of our random ideas can be collected into one planning force. So far, that’s the plan and we’re sticking to it!

Happy Wednesday!

Black Wedding Dress

I believe that Laura Ingalls Wilder was married in a black dress that she made especially for the occasion and then would serve her as her best Sunday dress.
