Do You Think I've Been Here Too Long?
March 25, 2011
When I started working at the Parkville Branch (back in the Ice Age when the library was in the basement of the Tower Dr. building and was called the Platte Woods Library), we had the old card catalog. There are those folks who miss the card catalog. I don’t. I remember the look of terror on my co-worker’s face when she saw little children playing around the drawers, and she realized that she would have to take a huge part of her afternoon putting back the cards that accidently fell out when someone pulled the metal rod out that held the cards in.
When I started at the library, we had a machine called a Gaylord. It cut a small part out of a card and stamped the date on it at the same time. I don’t think anyone misses the Gaylord machine. That thing hated me. Without fail, every time I came near it, it got stuck and made a hideous noise that made you think of a giant truck spewing exhaust everywhere or a huge creature who was in pain and dying a horrible death or an explosion of insurmountable intensity………. you get the point. Then, I would have to crawl under the desk and unplug the thing. I can’t tell you how happy I was when it was gone.
When I started at the library, the internet was new and we were all very excited to learn about it. Now, the internet is a huge part of everyday life. I don’t know what we would do without it. When I started at the library, the most important part of our day was getting things done. Shelving, sorting, cataloging, calling people for their holds, and generally keeping things in order. All of that is still important, but it has a place and customers take first place. Over everything else, the customer takes precedence. You are now the most important person to us, ever.
You are my priority!!
The library has changed a lot since I started almost twenty years ago. I can honestly say that things have changed for the better. Now the library has become more user-friendly. Nowadays, all of us have access to the catalog, not just some elite group of smarty pants folks who work here. Now when you are at home and you need to find where a book is or that new movie that you are interested in is, all you have to do is log onto our website and find out for yourself.
As long as Google is around, my grandkids will not know what it is like to have to pick up an atlas and find information about a country. That’s not a bad thing. And, I don’t miss having to lift those heavy atlases and find the country information because sometimes the info is out of date before the ink is dry. Now, the grandkids can log onto the library website and find updated information on our library databases.
Although we have the best website EVER, we still LOVE talking to you in person. So if you need something, you are more than welcome to call me personally if need be. My name is Penny. I work at the Parkville Branch. I will be pleased to help you any way I can.
