Do It Yourself, Why Don’t Ya?!
June 13, 2013
So, I’ve always been sort of a punk at heart (although I don’t really dress like one, but I do LOVE that music!). Not in the sense of, "Quit running through my yard, you little punks!" but more in the sense that I’m a pretty fierce individualist, and I have a big DIY ethic. I march to the beat of my own drum. I’m anti-this, that, and the other, and I recently made the big leap from vegetarianism to veganism, which was a long time coming for me. Looking back, I know I had these ideals growing up, but pressure from various sources made it hard for me to put them into action. I got picked on when I tried to be who I truly was (don’t cry for me…..Argentina…sorry, had to). So, for many years, I just put it on the back burner. Now that I’m fully ensconced in adulthood (I still feel like a kid most of the time, and probably act like one-ha!), I have embraced who I am, and it feels great!
Okay, back to the DIY ethic I mentioned before. I used to "rearrange" my clothes sometimes as a teenager (“they’re all gonna laugh at you!”), and I loved to sew. These days, I still do that on occasion, but I also have adopted many more DIY practices. I make my own cleaning products, jewelry, perfume, dog food, human food (I realize that sounds sort of strange, but I mean I have let go of most “convenience” food; I make my own bread, tortillas, used dried beans, etc.), and I can always find a way to repurpose certain items like empty coffee cans and old clothes. Not only do I have fun making my own stuff, I save a ton of money doing it!
I have found that working for MCPL has only helped me in my DIY quest. I am a Page (not from a book, I shelve the books), so I see a plethora of books each shift I work. Nonfiction is my favorite section, and almost every time I load a cart to put away up there, I find something that tickles my fancy. I have learned a lot of my DIY "recipes" from MCPL’s vast resources, and you can, too!
Not only can you find books on whatever you want to do yourself, but MCPL also has great Research Databases to help you in your venture. Delve into some of the following, and you won’t be disappointed:
- Automotive and Small Engines (I don’t think I’ll ever want to fix my own car, but if that’s your bag, you go, man!)
- Business and Finance (You wouldn’t at first glance think this has anything to do with DIY, but there’s good stuff on doing your own finances or starting a business and what not.)
- DIY and Hobbies (uh, that’s a no-brainer!)
- Foreign Language
- Magazines and Periodicals
Long live DIY!!!
