Digital Bookmobile Stopping at MCPL
June 13, 2013
While the eBook revolution has redefined readership, it has also redefined the concept of the bookmobile, as MCPL customers will see when the OverDrive Digital Bookmobile makes two stops at MCPL later this month.
The vehicle may as well be called the OverDrive Digital Playground, as it features a host of eBook platforms that customers can literally get their hands on in order to gauge not just the look but the feel and functionality of the current crop of devices. The bookmobile’s "Gadget Gallery" includes: Kindle HD, Nook HD+, Windows Phone 8, Creative Zen X-Fi3, Blackberry, Sony Reader, iPod Touch, Galaxy Tablet, and Creative Zen.
The OverDrive Digital Bookmobile is stopping at MCPL to celebrate the continued rise in eBook readership at the Library. Dates and locations are:
Tuesday, June 18
Parkville Branch, 8815 Tom Watson Pkwy.
1 p.m. – 7 p.m.
Wednesday, June 19
Lee’s Summit Branch, 150 NW Oldham Pkwy.
1 p.m. – 7 p.m.
So what about this rise in eBook readership?
The MCPL Virtual Branch is made possible in part by the digital content from OverDrive, which provides the eBook and downloadable audiobook content for our customers; and since MCPL first hosted the OverDrive Digital Bookmobile last year, downloads via the Virtual Branch have more than doubled – averaging more than 60,000 checked-out items per month so far in 2013. The Virtual Branch is now on track to become our busiest library location, in terms of circulation.

The OverDrive Digital Bookmobile is intended for a wide audience – from those who are still just curious about eBooks and would like a 101-style introduction; to the early adopters who want to get a feel for the latest eBook gadgetry; and anyone who wants to learn about the full array of digital content offerings from MCPL.
MCPL staff members will also be on-hand to offer troubleshooting tips and advice for new eBook users with questions about downloading materials via the MCPL Virtual Branch.
And eBook readers are, of course, welcome to participate in any of the ongoing book discussion groups hosted throughout the MCPL system; click here for book group dates and locations.
