Decking the Halls

December 13, 2011

Have you finished decorating for Christmas? You can tell a lot about a person by looking at their Christmas tree. There are those whose efforts look like something out of a decorator’s magazine, and those that are obviously a project for the whole family. Neither is true at our house. I put up at least two full-sized trees (artificial, since I’m allergic to the real ones) each year, mostly by myself.

My husband claims the trees are cluttered—I love ornaments and it shows! It takes hours and days to get all them placed, just so, on the trees. I have a whole tree just of Noah’s ark ornaments, collected over the past 20 years. Other ornaments remind me of special people, times and places. Ornaments that light up or make sounds are really fun. My sister-in-law worked for Hallmark for almost 30 years, so there are lots of those: Kiddie Cars, trains, Dr. Seuss, nativity, churches, Fisher Price, etc. I even let my husband hang his Star Trek and Star Wars ornaments on the tree. Every year, there are a few more that I just have to buy! In addition, I have homemade ornaments from when my near-grown son was little, some that my husband made when he was a boy, and my mother-in-law’s crocheted snowflakes.

If that wasn’t enough, I also love glass balls of every shape and color. Ok, so maybe my trees are cluttered, but I love it when they’re done. Now to finish the shopping, wrapping, holiday baking and Christmas cards...
