Dearborn Area History Has Been Gathered By Mrs. Lu Durham
September 14, 2010
The Dearborn Branch has a unique collection of information on area families gathered by Mrs. Lu Durham. A number of the genealogies start with early residents of the area, as long ago as the 1840s. These are organized into notebooks with the families in alphabetical order.
As well as family trees, the collection contains a number of written family histories. Newspaper articles were also collected along with wedding, baptism, birth, marriage, and death notices from the local newspapers. Local families contributed pictures, wedding announcements, and other paper historical items.
Thumbing through these books is a wonderful walk through local history. We can read of residents born in the early settlement days of Platte County, as well as fires, tornadoes, and crippling snows. Here are mementos of elections, businesses, and prize winning tomatoes.
People have dropped by from as far away as Pennsylvania to gather information on their ancestors, and this is a tremendously, enjoyable resource.
