Dana Stabenow
April 03, 2012
Last year, I checked out a book (from a MCPL branch, of course!) by Dana Stabenow. Dana has written a series of books featuring a recurring character named Kate Shugak. Kate has worked as a professional and private detective. I've read all of the books in the Kate Shugak series except the latest book (and I'm on hold for it through MCPL), and I have thoroughly enjoyed each one.
If you like reading mysteries with a female character solving crimes, I'd recommend this series to you. The author is a life-long resident of Alaska, and this shows up in the interesting details about Alaska found in each book. Another interesting item is that as you read the books, more details about Kate's childhood and teen years are revealed in each story. If you're looking for a new detective/crime series, this is one I'd recommend.

Can't seem to stop...
Discovered her books through the Iditarod site. Started with the first Kate Shugak novel, am now on number 12 in the series and have just been chewing them up one after the other... it's kind of like chain reading... I can't seem to stop! Thank goodness for my Nook as I don't have to wait until I can get to the store to get the next installment! The characters are so well developed that they feel like family. I've laughed, and oh, how I've cried too. Lots of interesting information about Alaska, the people who live there, their culture and beliefs, and just everyday life. I don't think I'd survive it myself, for so many reasons, but it fascinates me and prods my imagination in so many ways. I couldn't recommend this series of books more highly!

Kate Shugak
I own every one of the Kate Shugak books and my only complaint is that Dana Stabenow doesn't write 5 a year. I impatiently await each new novel and reread all the others frequently. Our Reservation is in Quebec and I have never been to Alaska but So much of the Native attitude and culture transcends the country. I'm 68, write faster !!
