Creative Writing for Kids

March 06, 2013

Last month, the Homeschoolers @ the Library group at the North Oak Branch had a Creative Writing Program. Creative writing is so important for kids. We worked hard to show that writing IS FUN. When you approach it as a chore, you have already set yourself up for failure.

The kids, ages 5-10, amazed us with their creative skills. Our writing contest was the final challenge that put their skills to the test. They had 7 minutes to write a fun story. Here are our winners!

Helen’s Story

It was a bad day for Amy. She had backed out her mom’s eighteen wheeler and had crushed her grandma’s $100,000,000 rose bush that had a gold flower pot! Now she was up in her room crying but then her fairy godmother came on a gold motorcycle. She hid under the bed. But the fairy said, “Come out and I will show you your future.” They stared wizzing on the gold motorcycle. Her grandma was laughing, her mom was horrified. Then her grandma said it was an accident. Then the fairy and Amy were back in the room eating cake!

Julian’s Story

Many years ago lived dragons. But this type of dragon is a plant eater but breathes fire still. They help and are playful. Many that still live in the sky hiding. Whey they cry it rains.

Congratulations to our winners! I am so proud of all of you. Keep practicing and have fun!
