Coming Soon to North Independence
May 27, 2011
The North Independence Branch is having a couple of great library programs next month that I think will definitely jump start your summer spirits! Especially since both of these programs have roots back to the Spirit of ‘76.
The first one, American Memory, will discuss the massive online American Memory historical collections created by the Library of Congress and other institutions. American Memory has over 130 collections covering a wide range of topics and containing over 9 million items. Each collection has different types of formats such as books, photographs, maps, motion pictures, sound recordings, etc. These collections do a wondrous job of exploring and documenting the American experience. It’s a marvelous resource for the benefit of researchers, teachers, students, and everyone interested in the American past. It also contains excellent supplemental learning materials. This program will be held on Wednesday, June 15th at 7:00 p.m.
The other program is dramatically titled Presidents Who Saved the Country. It will focus on those presidents who led the county during America’s most troubled times. I think we’re especially fortunate to have Dr. Max Skidmore present this program. Dr. Skidmore has a long distinguished career as a university professor and has written a number of books about American Government. Two of his books include Presidential Performance: A Comprehensive Review and After the White House: Former Presidents as Private Citizens. The presidency and American political thought are just two of Dr. Skidmore’s specialties. He has also been a Fulbright lecturer to India, a Fulbright scholar as well as a Dean of Arts & Sciences. What better way to get ready for the Fourth of July than by coming to this presentation. It will be held on Saturday, June 25th at 2:00 pm.
Registration for both of these programs can be made online or by calling our branch library at (816) 252-0950. Oh and did I mention that these programs are absolutely "FREE"?
