In Salinger’s 214 pages, we follow Holden Caulfield for 48 hours as he transitions from boy to man. Holden has failed out of Pencey Prep and decides to leave school early. He sets out to explore New York City before he returns home and, while there, experiences the spectrum of adult life. As Holden navigates the city, he realizes that he’s surrounded by phonies and it angers him. But, as he matures, Holden finds that he has something to offer to those who are as confused by human nature as he is.
Check out Catcher in the Rye and discover why this controversial novel is still relevant.
