Come Join Us for the Colbern Road Evening Book Club

This month, the Colbern Road Evening Book Club is discussing Swamplandia! by Karen Russell. Join us on Wednesday, July 25th at 7:00 p.m. to talk about this debut novel.

Swamplandia! takes us to the swamps of the Florida Everglades where the Bigtree family runs an alligator amusement park of the same name. The youngest Bigtree, Ava, longs to be an alligator wrestling champion like her mother, but since her death, her family and the park are slowly slipping away. Their arch enemy and biggest competitor, The World of Darkness, is cutting in to their profits and stealing their patrons, and the head of their clan, Chief Bigtree, isn’t dealing with either loss well.

When the Chief sets out on a business trip and her older brother, Kiwi, leaves the island for a main-lander’s life, Ava is left alone with her slightly mental big sister and a pit full of alligators. Although Ava is a very resourceful thirteen-year-old, she’s not sure what to do when Osceola disappears and the mysterious Bird Man offers to help. Will Ava be able to keep her family and Swamplandia! afloat?
