A Classic With a Twist
July 29, 2010
As a fan of all things Jane Austen and a new reader of fantasy fiction, including the popular vampire craze, this title stood out while browsing the stacks. Vampire Darcy’s Desire is a Pride and Prejudice adaptation which takes the classic novel’s characters and adds a gothic, vampire inspired twist.
The author, Regina Jeffers, aims to give Pride and Prejudice a horror romance slant, while maintaining Austen’s characters and sensibilities. In her novel, Jeffers combines the traditional gothic themes of Austen’s time with the modern ideas of the essential vampire novel, romance and desire. The resulting blend of genres brings the reader Mr. Darcy, who yearns for Elizabeth Bennet as a man, but “as a vampire, he is also driven to possess her.”(from the publisher) They are intensely drawn to each other and must confront the power of their forbidden love as well as contend with a dark threat from Mr. Wickham, who has placed a curse on the Darcy family.
So, if you’ve loved Jane Austen since high school, and your high schooler has you hooked on Twilight, try Vampire Darcy’s Desire.
*For other classic adaptations such as Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, try the Quirk Classic Series.
