Classic Book Heidi Has Two Sequels. Who Knew?
May 08, 2013
One of the fun parts of working at the Library is getting to talk to the customers about the various books they read and recommend. The other day, a woman wanted to read the sequels to Heidi, the children's classic by Johanna Spyri. I didn't even know there were sequels. I searched MCPL's catalog and didn't find anything. I got on WorldCat and, sure enough, there were two sequels by Charles Tritten, Heidi Grows Up and Heidi's Children.
I ordered these two books for the woman and promptly requested them for myself, since I was also curious as to what had happened to Heidi and her grandfather. These are both quick reads written in the style of Spyri and published around 1938. They tell of Heidi going to school, coming back to teach in the little mountain town, and then of her life with Peter and her grandfather.
According to Wikipedia:
"The two sequel books, Heidi Grows Up and Heidi's Children, were neither written nor endorsed by Spyri, but were adapted from other works by her English translator, Charles Tritten, many years after she died." Either way, they make a great ending to an already wonderful classic book. Check them out for yourselves through WorldCat at your local branch or online. Enjoy!
