A Cinderella for the Future
October 26, 2012
Cinder by Marissa Meyer is the first book in the Lunar Chronicles series, and it is a futuristic Cinderella story. Cinder is a cyborg, adopted by a scientist who died of the blue fever (a disease ravaging the nation) soon after bringing her to his family in New Beijing. Left to the mercy of her new mother and sisters, Cinder is treated poorly because she is cyborg...but also being blamed for her adopted father’s death.
A few hundred years ago, some people colonized to the moon to escape Earth’s over-population and global warming. They established a monarchy and developed physic powers, and now the queen on the moon seeks to rule earth. This book starts the queen’s war on earth and Cinder’s part in it.
One thing I love about Cinder is that it’s set in the future, but not in a technologically dead future. This is Meyer’s first published story, and I think it’s wonderful. I can’t wait for Scarlet, the next book in the series.
