Children's Computers at North Independence Branch Are Awesome

January 27, 2011

Calling All Kids! I was working upstairs at the newly remodeled North Independence Branch when I noticed another cool new thing in the children's department.

Sitting on one of the small round tables in the middle of the children's area were 2 brand-new computers. They were real, life-sized computers. And, they were for kids only. They're awesome. Bring your children into the library, and give them the experience of wandering through this colorful department filled with books, over-stuffed, child-sized reading chairs, small tables and large puffy climb-on pieces that your child can recline upon or move around. They're only limited by their imagination and gravity!

If you want to introduce your child to the library, then this is the place. There's nothing intimidating about the North independence Branch - especially the kid's area. Everything has been designed with an eye for discovery through the punch of color on the walls and the rugs, the child-sized comfort of the chairs and tables, or the cool, inclusive feel of the young adult/teen area. It makes you want to wander with your child, and see what's around the next corner.

Back to the computers:

Ok, this is where you can give your child a few minutes of computer fun without the worry of the internet or the worry of deleting something "important". There are 2 computers, and each one has 2 sets of headphones connected to it. The keyboards are colorful and color-coded ...for example I discovered that all the vowels are purple and the consonants are green, punctuation is yellow and so on..very helpful to budding keyboardists. The mouse is color-coded, too. Blue for left and yellow for right...easier for those of us who get mixed up that way! Ok, what can kids do on these computers? Well, they can't get on the internet, but they can get on several educational programs like World Explorer, Beginning Reading, Trudy's Time and Place House and La Casa De Dora. Also one called Jumpstart First Grade...sure to be a popular program. Most of all, these are fun introductions to the computer world for your younger children.

Come explore what North Independence has to offer your children. Get them started on becoming life-time users of the library.  It's a gift that is free and forever.
