A Chameleon Actress - Glenn Close

October 29, 2012

What a movie! Glenn Close is a chameleon actress playing a man; I almost forgot that she was a woman from time to time.

This movie in particular is about a woman living her life in Ireland in the 19th century. Back then, women weren't really allowed to do much outside of getting a husband and tending to the family. Being independent and being a woman were two ideas you didn't place in the same sentence in those days. So our actress, Glenn Close, takes up the task of being a man to get a job as a butler and gain her independence.

I won't spoil the movie for you, but with a little bit of romance involved, you'd imagine that tale would get pretty interesting, and it does! I have only experienced one other actress who can portray their character so exquisitely, and for me, it is Meryl Strep.

Glenn Close does a phenomenal job playing in this role. I wonder how many women in 19th century Ireland portrayed themselves as men to gain their independence?

If you enjoyed Albert Nobbs, you might enjoy My Week With Marilyn, Julie and Julia, or The Iron Lady.
