Celebrating International Women’s Day
March 08, 2017
Today is International Women’s Day, which also falls within Women’s History Month. As a young professional woman in the 21st Century, I often think about the rights I enjoy today that are all due to the work of courageous and dedicated women who came before me. It is because of them that I can vote, own property, and earned a respected degree from an institution of higher education in pursuit of a promising career.
In light of this, I am spending my International Women’s Day paying tribute to these pioneers by exploring the Gerritsen Collection of Aletta H. Jacobs, available with your MCPL Access Pass. In this online database, there is a vast range of written materials about women’s rights movements and the feminists and suffragettes who played key roles in them.
My favorite finds so far have been letters written by the renowned Susan B. Anthony who worked tirelessly on behalf of the women’s rights cause and sadly perished 14 years before the 19th Amendment was ratified in 1920 giving women the right to vote. Her writing is strong and impassioned, and had I been around during her era, I hope I would have been able to replicate even a fraction of her unwavering devotion to gender equality.
I am also in process of reading I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou. Another breathtakingly talented writer, Angelou’s own journey to overcome racism, sexual violence, and a myriad of other injustices throughout her life, is beyond inspiring. She was truly a creative genius and used those rare talents to shine a light on causes that genuinely deserve it.
Lastly, on this International Women’s Day, I am paying tribute to one very special woman in my life by giving her a gift. For all of the things that she has given me throughout my life, including an endless supply of love and support and encouragement to be the best possible woman I can be, I am giving my mom a Library Lovers membership.
As she is a former employee of public and academic libraries, and a regular MCPL customer, I know this will mean a great deal to her. And it’s the least I can do for her serving as my friend, confidant, and role model for the last 25 years, which has shaped me into the woman I am today.
