Celebrate Summer, Celebrate Freedom!
June 03, 2013
Summer doesn’t technically begin until June 21. "Bah!" I say. We’re Americans, and we declare that summer began on Memorial Day. This year, the pools have been filled, the gardens planted, the vacation plans are on the calendar, and we’re just waiting for the rains to stop and sunny days to begin.
There are opportunities all around us to celebrate the season before it evaporates. Remember how right after July Fourth, the entire world starts counting the days until school and football start? (I don’t personally count either of these but certain family members do.)
Hopefully, your children and teens have already registered for our Summer Reading Programs. There is plenty of time to log those books and earn some great prizes. These programs run until July 31.
You will find excitement every week at the Camden Point Branch. Each Thursday in June and July, (closed for July Fourth), we’re hosting a great family program. See our Events page for program descriptions and to register.
You can also plan to attend the Freedom Festival and parade in Camden Point. This charming parade of children, pets, fire trucks, and more will take place on June 29 at 5:30 p.m.; parade entry-forms will be available at the Camden Point Branch. Other activities in town include a free bounce house and carnival games provided by the Baptist Church, food vendors and live music all at City Park, and a nice fireworks display to end the evening.
I’m making my summer to-do-list: gardening, a program or two, vacation, camping and fishing, a museum, and the Freedom Festival. I’ll also be checking out a MCPL book like Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn to take along. Let’s celebrate!
