Celebrate the American Worker
September 01, 2010
Camden Point Branch staff are observing Labor Day with a book display honoring the American Worker. This display contains books covering a variety of occupations. It provides an opportunity for students to see the various careers open to them.
Labor Day began in 1882 during the height of the American labor movement. Labor leader, Peter J. McGuire and Machinist, Matthew MacGuire were responsible for ensuring that the Central Labor Union in New York City celebrated the first Labor Day with a parade, picnic, and various other activities. Two years later, the Knights of Labor then rallied for Labor Day to gain the status of an annual observance. Today, we continue to honor hard-working Americans with wonderful picnics, parades, and celebrations. To learn more about the history of Labor Day,view the research database entitled Facts on File American History Online.
