Caving Adventures

November 24, 2010

Have you ever thought of exploring caves in Missouri? Did you know there are over 6,000 caves in our Show-Me state that you can explore? I joined Pony Express Grotto two years ago, and learned how to cave safely with a group of experienced cavers. If you choose a specific group, you have the advantage of exploring non-commercial caves with the landowner’s permission. What a fun way to discover new caves with unique ecosystems and rock formations throughout Missouri!

If you are not ready to join a group, try visiting commercial caves in the state. The following books have interesting information about caves in our state and all of these titles can be checked out at your local MCPL:

• Missouri Caves in History and Legend by H. Dwight Weaver
• Cave Detectives: Unraveling the Mystery of an Ice Age Cave by David L. Harrison
• Show me--Natural Wonders by Don H. Corrigan
• Lost Caves of St. Louis by Hubert Rother
• Marvel Cave: Silver Dollar City, Branson, Missouri by Ronald L. Martin
• Missouri, the Cave State by H. Dwight Weaver
• Adventures Underground in the Caves of Missouri by Hazel Rowena Powell
