March 22, 2012
I've heard people say (in a somewhat snarky tone) that there is a special day or week set aside for everything. I usually just smile and nod, quickly changing the subject. I never really thought about it for any length of time. However, this week I was wracking my brain to think of something to blog about. So, I pulled my handy reference book to take a look at various events this week and next.
Lo and behold, I found a very obscure and special week that I'd never heard of. It's Root Canal Awareness Week! Wow, just typing those words makes me cringe. I have never had a root canal and hope I never do. My worst dental experience was getting all four wisdom teeth removed at the same time when I was in my early 20s. I can only imagine that a root canal would be worse than that. Anyway, the week runs March 25-31 this year, and it's the 6th time this event has been "celebrated." The American Association of Endodontists established the week to educate the public about the misconceptions of the root canal treatment and to provide information about the benefits of the root canal.
I will close by repeating a hoary saying about dental hygiene: "Only floss the teeth you want to keep."
