British Isles Census Records
January 03, 2012
I am just starting on the British line in my family genealogy. Needing to understand a bit more about British research, I looked at the book, Finding Answers in British Isles Census Records, available here at the Midwest Genealogy Center. The first official census for Great Britain was taken in 1801. A census has been taken every ten years since, except 1941 when Britain was involved in World War II.
Browsing through the table of contents of this book gave me some ideas of where to go next and how to apply this research. Some chapter titles include: Missing or Additional Records, Online Access, Searching Electronic Databases, Street Indexes, Surname Indexes, Finding Aids at the Family Records Centre, Using and Interpreting Census Records, and also Researching Individual Census Years.
With appendixes listing addresses to libraries and archives and questions asked in each census (1801-1901), plus worksheets, this book is a great starting point in British genealogy research.
