Books in the Freezer

May 02, 2012

If you watched Friends. religiously like I did, and still do (thanks to reruns), you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about when I say I love the one where Joey puts Little Women in the freezer. In the episode, Joey challenges Rachel to read his favorite book, The Shining, which is so scary that he keeps it in the freezer.  Rachel agrees, but only if Joey will read her favorite, Little Women.

Although hesitant at first, Joey really does enjoy Little Women. He’s so excited, in fact, that he accidentally ruins the ending of The Shining for Rachel. For revenge, Rachel spoils his book by telling Joey that Laurie is a man and Jo is a woman. (That puts a whole new spin on the book, doesn’t it?) Anyway, when Joey realizes that Beth probably isn’t going to make it, he has to put Little Women in the freezer. It’s just too much!

Joey has such an emotional response to what he’s reading that he can’t finish. Have you ever felt that way about a book? Have you gotten into a book so deeply that you can’t get out? Did you have to put it in the freezer and walk away? Please share your experience with us!

I've given up on poorly

Submitted by Anonymous on May 9, 2012 - 11:41pm.

I've given up on poorly written books but never just stuck one in the (proberbial) freezer. There are some books I can't get out of my head though. Some I've read 2 or 3 times or more. Some I've held in my heart for years til I could find someone to share it with who would 'get it' or until I was able to resolve some conflicting feeling the book evoked. Words are magic, aren't they?

Little Women scares me too!

I've read "Little Women" several times, but I skip the chapter where Beth dies every time. I can't handle reading books that make me sob!

I Cried

Submitted by Anonymous on May 3, 2012 - 3:29pm.

I actually cried when I read What About Grandma by Hadley Irwin. Sixteen year old Rys struggled with her grandma being in a nursing home [?for the rest of her life?] and the emotions of her first love. The book was voted a Best Book for Young Adults & I agree!
