Books That Are Hot.... or Not?

September 13, 2010

It’s happened to all of us at one time or another, readers and non-readers alike. Someone, a friend, a sibling, a parent, a co-worker – SOMEONE comes and tells you that there is a book that ‘you have to read!’ Sometimes you put it off – you try to delay as long as you can – there are so many other things to do. Errands to run, places to go, people to see, (I tend to have too many OTHER things to read) but sooner or later, it catches up with you, and you find yourself curled up with that book everyone’s been talking about. Upon finishing the book – you either aren’t certain what everyone’s gushing about (Twilight, anyone?), or you know that you just HAVE to convince someone else to read the book. (If you haven’t read The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society yet, read it soon, before the holidays consume you!)

So what have people been rushing (and calling) into the Red Bridge Branch for lately?  Here’s a few:

  • The Help by Kathryn Stockett
  • The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls
  • Half Broke Horses by Jeannette Walls
  • The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson
  • The Girl Who Played with Fire by Stieg Larsson
  • The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner by Stephenie Meyer
  • The Titan’s Curse by Rick Riordan
  • The Red Pyramid by Rick Riordan

Funny thing, books… sometimes after you read one that’s so utterly amazing, all you can think is ‘Is there a sequel? Please, let there be a sequel!’ To those rare books that are parts of series that you can’t put down, it’s entirely possible to get in over your head, especially if the series isn’t finished yet. This is good and bad in a way. I entered the world of Harry Potter six months before the release of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Seven years, four movies, three books, two release parties, and one trip to Newfoundland later…. And sometimes all I can think is – I want a Book 8!!!
