Books Are Blessings, Too!
December 30, 2010
I always knew I was raised by wonderful and loving parents, but after reading The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, I appreciate my parents even more! This memoir is about two extremely eccentric parents and four children who live in less than desirable conditions. Their father was brilliant and charismatic when sober, which wasn’t often. Their mother was self-absorbed and would rather paint than parent. The Walls children learned to support themselves, eating out of trash cans at school or painting their skin so the holes in their pants didn't show. Buck-toothed Jeannette even tried making her own braces when she heard what orthodontia cost.
This was a quick read for me because I couldn’t put it down. I would love to tell you more, but I don’t want to spoil the ending for you. After reading a book like this, it’s good to pause, look around, and give thanks for all the blessings we receive every day!
