Book Review: Painter and Ugly
July 03, 2013
Painter and Ugly is a children’s book about two champion sled dogs that are best friends. This book was written and illustrated by Robert J. Blake. Painter and Ugly was selected as a nominee for the 2013-2014 Show Me Readers Award. This award is designed to recognize authors of books for children in first through third grade.
Blake starts the story by describing the friendship that exists between Painter and Ugly. The two dogs are always together, both racing together and playing together. But one day, their sled team is broken up, and the dogs are put on separate teams for the Junior Iditarod Race. What will happen to them? Will they ever see each other again?
Overall, this is a heartwarming story about a great friendship between two dogs. The illustrations are presented to look like oil canvas paintings, and the story is told from the dogs’ point of view. While this book was created with young readers in mind, anyone who likes stories about dogs will enjoy it.
