Book Review: Labradors: Work, Rest and Play
July 16, 2013
Labradors: Work, Rest and Play by Nick Ridley is not a typical dog book. Readers will find it shelved with other dog books in our Library, and it is certainly a book dog lovers will enjoy. But what makes this book stand out is the high quality collection of pictures it contains.
Ridley is a professional dog photographer, and this book contains hundreds of pictures that he took of Labradors. Most of these pictures were taken in countryside locations, such as the Scottish Highlands. They feature all sorts of Labradors doing all sorts of things, such as swimming, running, or jumping over fences. There’s even a picture of a dog jumping over a fence and two other dogs at the same time. Readers will also find cute pictures of Labrador puppies. The quality of these pictures is magnificent, and they perfectly highlight the dog or dogs featured in them.
Although Ridley’s photos are the focal point of this book, he also provides information on the breed, like what types there are and the work they are used for by their masters. There’s one section about a special Labrador named Endal who became an invaluable companion to a disabled war veteran. Ridley also shares stories about how he set up and took some of the pictures featured in this book.
The primary audience for this book is people who are fond of dogs, especially Labradors. However, readers who are interested in animal photography or just like looking at pictures of dogs in action will also enjoy this book. The reading level of this book makes it more suitable for adults or older teens.
