Book Club - The Tenderness of Wolves
March 16, 2013
Don’t you love that title? It fairly reeks of mystery and danger. Though, nowadays, we’re much less superstitious about them; combining the words "wolves" and "tenderness" in the same sentence can’t help but intrigue.
Stef Penney follows through on the promises in her title. A filmmaker by training and profession, Penney gives cinematic grandeur to the harsh, winter frontier of Canada in the mid-19th century. A man is murdered. A teenaged boy disappears. A mother forms a dangerous alliance to set out into the wilderness to find her son and clear his name.
Penney skillfully weaves a complicated web of subplots and a large cast of characters. Wolves hover on the fringes, furtively beautiful and threatening.
